Lean Beef Gives You ZIP!

Already famous for its mouth-watering recipes, The Beef Information Centre is making it easy to use nutrition knowledge everyday by preparing quick and healthy meals. Free copies of the new booklet “Beef Recipes for balanced living,” will be available during March in selected grocery stores across Canada.

All the recipes in the booklet feature beef cuts that meet the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s criteria for their Health Check(TM) Program. To qualify, meat cuts must be lean, containing no more than 10 percent fat. In fact, when trimmed of visible fat, all cuts of beef (except short ribs) meet this criterion. Extra lean cuts contain no more than 7.5 percent fat, and some, such as Beef Inside Round Marinating Steak, have as little as 2 percent fat.

Throughout the booklet, meal suggestions are complemented with easy-to-implement Health Notes. For example, it explains that including lean beef in your meals is a great way to ensure you are getting the ZIP nutrients – zinc, iron and protein. All help families lead active lives. Zinc boosts your immune system and promotes children’s healthy growth; iron carries oxygen to fuel daily activities, and high-quality protein builds and repairs muscles.

“Healthy living includes eating well and staying active,” concludes Mina. “I urge everyone to read, play, get hungry and get cooking.”
