|
A decade ago, as fat-phobia surged across North America, dietitians at the Beef Information Centre began work on a totally new concept to address fat in the diet. Using strong visuals of teaspoons of fat, the resource delivered the message of "added fats" in a simple, meaningful way. Called A Matter of Fat, the booklet and its sequels, have become one of the Centre's most popular and enduring resources. "More than 3 ½ million copies have been printed and distributed to consumers, registered dietitians, doctors and other educators across Canada," says Lisa Mina, Nutrition Communications Manager of the Beef Information Centre. "The booklet has stood the test of time with a steady stream of orders from the beginning. In fact, the booklet was offered to physicians and the response far exceeded our expectations, with requests topping 325,000 copies." Designed as a counselling tool for doctors and nutrition educators, the booklets have become so popular, that many health professionals rely on them as part of their teaching toolkit. "We didn't recognize just how important the booklet had become until we tried to discontinue it for several months while we developed the updated 2003 version," explains Mina. "We received such impassioned pleas, that we felt obliged to print an additional 100,000 copies as a stop-gap to fill the immediate orders." Based on feedback from registered dietitians, the resource has been labelled as "consumer friendly" and "the key nutrition resource when it comes to communicating about fat". The visuals show how making small changes to the foods we choose can make a big difference to our overall fat intake. Now a new and updated version of A Matter of Fat: an easy-to-use guide to fat and healthy eating is available. It has been received with the same positive excitement as its predecessor. |
