Lean beef tastes delicious. Need another reason to eat lean beef? How about 26? Here's an alphabet of reasons why beef fits into a healthy diet. Amino acids. Beef contains all 9 essential amino acids making it an excellent source of complete protein. B12 is a vitamin needed to make DNA and for all cells to function. It is found naturally only in animal products, not vegetables and grains. A serving of beef provides more than 100% of your recommended daily intake of B12. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an anti cancer compound demonstrated to fight cancer cells, is found in higher concentrations in beef than in other meats. D is a vitamin that helps you absorb and use calcium and phosphorus for strong bones and teeth. Beef is a good source of vitamin D. Energy. A 100 g serving of lean beef has 213 calories on average. Fits into a healthy eating plan. Canada's Food Guide recommends eating 2 to 3 servings from the Meat and Alternatives food group each day. Goodness in every bite. Ounce for ounce, beef delivers a nutrition punch, providing many important nutrients in a form easily absorbed and used by the body. Health Check. Eight cuts of beef (trimmed of fat), along with Lean and Extra Lean Ground Beef, participate in the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's Health Check program. Iron, an essential part of the hemoglobin in red blood cells, carries oxygen throughout the body, providing us with energy. Beef provides EIGHT TIMES more absorbable iron than an equal size serving of chicken. Just 6.4% of fat in the diet comes from beef. Twenty-nine percent of fat in the diet comes from the fats and oils category รข?? those fats added in processing, cooking and at the table. Keep enjoying beef. It is Canadian's favourite protein. Lean. Over 70% of the ground beef sold in supermarkets is lean or extra lean. Minerals. Beef is a source of selenium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus in addition to iron and zinc. Nutrient dense. Beef contains 14 essential nutrients. Oleic acid, the main "good" fatty acid in olive oil, makes up half the fat in beef. Protein is needed to build and repair body tissues, like muscle, and is essential for all ages. A serving of beef provides twice as much protein as an equal serving of tofu. Quick and easy to prepare, beef is a natural convenience food. Reduced cholesterol. A serving of sirloin steak has 15% less cholesterol than either a serving of skinless chicken breast or sockeye salmon. Stearic acid. Not all saturated fats are "bad". Studies show that stearic acid does not raise LDL blood cholesterol. About 30% of the saturated fatty acids in beef are in the form of stearic acid. Thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and B6 help our bodies release food energy and promote healthy skin, eyes, nerves, and digestive system. Meat is the major dietary source of these B vitamins. Unsaturated fat. Beef has more unsaturated fat than saturated fat. Versatility. With so many cuts to choose from, beef can fit every menu and pocketbook. Wholesome. Who says eating smart means giving up what you love? Xcellent value. Yummy!! Need we say more? Zinc, an essential mineral found in beef, plays a critical role in growth and helps the body resist disease. Unlike the zinc in plant foods, the zinc in beef is easily absorbed by the body. |
