Food Safety Awareness Program for Foodservice

The Beef Information Centre (BIC) has launched their new Safe Food Handling campaign. Targeted at single unit operators, the campaign is designed to raise awareness of the risks to both the operator and the public when food safety is not a priority.

“We recognize that food safety is of the highest importance for restaurant goers, and we want to ensure that operators are doing everything possible to ensure a safe experience for their customers” says Marty Carpenter, BIC’s National Foodservice Manager “We conducted research with all segments of the industry and identified the single unit operator as the group we most needed to work with. These restaurateurs do not have access to the information and training materials that multi-unit operations have developed, nor do they necessarily have formal food safety training programs in place”.

The hard-hitting print campaign focuses on what can happen to the operator’s bottom line when there are food safety problems in his restaurant. In conjunction with the print campaign there are educational materials from BIC to assist the operator in training his staff in safe food handling practices. These are free of charge and can be ordered through BIC’s Vancouver office at 604-985-0113.

“Spelling out the consequences of sloppy food handling is a great way to raise awareness,” says Arthur Raynor, owner of The Little Chef Restaurant in Calgary. “It’s easy to become complacent, or not be able to find the time to train your staff. This new kit is an important tool in helping operators to educate their staff.”

The kit contains a laminated poster with user-friendly information on safe food handling and a guide to direct the operator to the many resources available for information and training. The kit also contains a booklet that spells out the “Top Ten” safe food handling issues in their restaurants, how to motivate staff to take them seriously, and the impact that safe food handling problems can have on business.

The Safe Food Handling campaign is also supported by a number of industry partners, including Foodservice and Hospitality Magazine, who provided help in production of the kit materials.

The Beef Information Centre is the marketing arm of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.
