HealthLink: Improving the Health of Canadians - Promoting Healthy Weights

HealthLink…news to use for health professionals

The Canadian Population Health Initiative, part of the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI), released a new report entitled Improving the Health of Canadians: Promoting Healthy Weights on February 15, 2006. This report focuses on features of the environments in which we live, learn, work and play that make it easier or harder for Canadians to make healthy eating and physical activity choices. The report reviews the latest research, presents new analyses and explores relevant policies and programs.

The report emphasizes that the battle against obesity requires approaches that go beyond simply telling Canadians to eat right and exercise. The report offers a comprehensive overview of the many factors that play a role in Canadian’s body weights and offers insight into policy options and considerations. It takes a look at key areas including the home and family environment, workplaces, community and physical environment, schools, the broader nutrition environment and personal health services.
