Précis:

This study used data from the Quebec Nutrition Survey of 2,118 noninstitutionalized Quebec adults aged 18 – 74 years. Total daily vitamin C and dietary iron intakes were compared with the EAR (estimated average requirement) for these nutrients. Absorbable iron was estimated using the Monsen model. The study results showed that 18.9% of women and 2.5% of men had a total dietary intake of iron below the EAR. However, 66.2% women and 25.6% of men had an estimated absorbable iron intake below the recommended level for absorbed iron. Consumption of beef had the strongest association with estimated absorbable iron; vegetable consumption was second.

Interpretation/relevance to beef industry:

Comment ... from BIC registered dietitians

  • This study showed that a significant percentage of women had a dietary iron intake that did not meet recommended requirements
  • When the absorption of the iron was taken into account, 2/3 of women and ¼ of men did not meet the recommended level for absorbed iron
  • Consumers should consider the type of iron as well as the amount. Heme iron, found in meat, fish and poultry, is more easily absorbed by the body than non-heme iron found in plant foods. Plus, meat, fish and poultry increase the absorption of non-heme iron.
  • Beef is a nutrient dense food providing 12 essential nutrients including B vitamins and highly available iron and zinc.
