Health Check

What is Health CheckTM?

Health CheckTM is an educational program developed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and is designed to make shopping for healthier food choices easier for consumers. The entire program, which was introduced in 1999, is based on Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating and promotes healthy eating, in general. Foods that qualify to use the Health CheckTM symbol must meet specific nutrient criteria.

What are the Direct Benefits of the Health CheckTM Program to My Store?

"Health concerns" continue to be the #1 reason given by consumers for eating less beef. (BIC Tracking Study, Thompson Lightstone, May, 2000)
By participating with the Beef Information Centre in this national initiative to educate consumers about beef's role in a healthy diet together we can improve consumer attitudes and drive beef sales.

The Beef Information Centre financially supports the Health Check™ education program of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This is not an endorsement. For more information, see www.healthcheck.org.

What are the Key Elements?

The Health CheckTM symbol, an explanatory message and a nutrition panel are the three key elements. ALL THREE MUST be displayed on-shelf or on-pack for each participating product with the aim of informing consumers that this food is part of a healthy eating plan. To support the program at the store level, many participating manufacturers are also using the Health CheckTM symbol in advertising and marketing campaigns.
