What is Health CheckTM?
Health CheckTM is a food information program from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada that helps Canadians make healthy food choices at the grocery store. The Health CheckTM symbol shows foods that qualify for the program. The criteria used for participation in the program are based on Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating and Nutrition Labelling regulations set by Health Canada.
How does beef qualify for the Health CheckTM program?
Lean and Extra Lean ground beef qualify for Health CheckTM since they contain no more that 17% and 10% fat, respectively.
How can a retail store make Lean and Extra Lean ground beef a part of the Health CheckTM program?
The Health CheckTM symbol, explanatory message and the Nutrition Facts table are the three key elements. ALL THREE MUST be displayed on-pack for each participating product with the aim of informing consumers that this food is part of a healthy eating plan. Why participate in Health CheckTM?
Health CheckTM has experienced steady growth since its launch in 1999. The program now includes close to 70 licensees and more than 375 products.
- Over the past year (unaided) consumer awareness of the Health CheckTM symbol has increased from 48% to 54%.
- A recent Ipsos-Reid survey indicated that 64% of those surveyed would be more likely to buy a food or beverage that shows the Health CheckTM logo.
- Nine out of ten Canadians report that nutrition is an important consideration when choosing food. (Tracking Nutrition Trends, National Institute of Nutrition, 2002)
