An independent research firm, The NPD Group Canada, Inc., asked consumer representatives from 1,300 households across Canada to record for a week what they ate and how it was prepared. In these diaries, representing the behaviours of more than 3,000 individuals over a twelve-month period, beef was on the menu more often than any other main dish. On those occasions when people were being entertained in other people’s homes, beef was the main dish at 22 per cent of the dinners. The next most popular entrées, when eating at friends’ or relatives’ homes, were chicken and pasta, served 15 and 14 per cent of the time respectively.
“Flavour, aroma, versatility and convenience probably account for beef’s sustained popularity,” says Corinne Dawley, National Consumer Information Manager for the Beef Information Centre, responsible for the development of many of the Centre’s recipes and booklets. “Cooks with all levels of experience find it easy, almost goof-proof, to build new recipes around beef.”
